More About Ski Helmets

Usually, You always get safer and comfortable helmets for Skiing or Snowboarding. You can be choosy regarding the ski helmets, just like how you choose the Skis/ Ski boots. In ski resorts along with ski lifts, ropeway solutions and personal skiing equipment, they usually offer ski helmets which are versatile, with adjustable ventilation, audio systems and many more features. The ski helmet can be used for snowboarding and vice versa. Although, the features of the ski helmets vary slightly with respect to different ski rides, it doesn’t really matter if we use the same ski helmet for different types of skiing.

For Alpine skiing and Racing, the helmets are expected to provide aerodynamic protection.

Since, Backcountry, Ski Touring and Ski Mountaineering may cause overheating of the head, it usually has more ventilation.

The Ski helmets used during Freeride and Freestyle Skiing are lightweight with more ventilation, because the skier will have to take sudden twists and turns which can be easily facilitated by lightweight ski accessories. They are more stylish to enhance the aesthetic appearance while performing the ski ride.

There are two different safety certifications that can be used for verifying the safety of the ski helmets.

CE EN1077 is the European safety approval certification, mainly used for alpine skiing and snowboarding.

ASTM F2040 is the US- standard safety certification for Skiing and snowboarding.

There are also helmets with both CE EN1077 and ASTM F2040 certifications.

Construction of Ski Helmets

The outer shell of the helmet can be a rigid surface for protecting the head from rough/rigid and sharp objects.

The Inner portion is mainly designed to absorb the shock and is made of expanded polystyrene (EPS).

Ski Helmets are basically constructed in 3 types:

ABS Helmets - These are the most common type of construction of Helmet. It is made up of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) for the outer shell and Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) in the inner portion. It is the heaviest and most common type of helmet with good protection.

In-Mold Helmets - It is a light weight which consists of outer shell made of very thin plastic and molded by EPS foam.

Hybrid Helmet - It is a mix of ABS technology on the upper portion and In-Mold on the lower portion. Therefore, it is lightweight with high resistance.

MIPS Technology - This helmet provides better protection and reduced rotational force.

Apart from this, the ski helmets are in-built with an integrated visor which makes it more comfortable for people with glasses. Some of it also has audio systems that have integrated headphones into the ear. These features offer comfort for the skiers during skiing and snowboarding.

Along with ski lifts, skiing equipment and ropeway solutions, the ski resorts are expected to provide most of these skiing accessories.
